RENO ARTIST GALINA MILTON STUDIES WITH WORLD REKNOWNED PORTRAITIST BURTON SILVERMAN

 August 14, 2008

Galina Milton was awed by the opportunity to study with
Burt Silverman.  “
Burt Silverman is one of the icons of American portrait painting. said Galina.I was honored to have the chance to study with him.

Galina, who immigrated to the United States from Ukraine, first settled in
San Francisco, where she earned a Master's degree from the Academy of Art University of San Francisco. She later returned to
St. Petersburg, Russia to study with Ivan Vituk and
Konstantin Grachev at the Repin Academy of Art.
Though she also paints landscapes, Galina's love is portraiture. Always wanting to improve her skills, she traveled to
New York in July to study with Silverman.

Burt Silverman, (b. 1928), has had 38 solo shows in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and
Washington, D. C.  His works have appeared in exhibitions in the National Portrait Gallery, the National Academy of Design Annuals, and the Royal Academy of Art in
London. And he won 32 major prizes and awards from such annual exhibitions as the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society.

Galina had a chance to study for a week with Silverman. The most exciting part of my experience with Burton Silverman was being able to work in the same room with an artist of his great ability, she said. One of the most valuable lessons I learned is that drawing is the attempt to capture the most correct model within the freedom of one  artistic expression.  The drawing that best captures the three dimensions of a subject also gives us the most honesty about that subject.

Galina Milton's work is presently being showcased in a month-long show at the Reno Co-op Gallery on Mill Streetin
Reno. It can also be seen at the Art Source Gallery and Sierra Artists' Guild Gallery in
Reno.

She is a member of the Oil Painters of America and her painting Nomads in Tibet was included in the organizationâ National Exhibition held in
Missoula, Montana in May.  More than 1000 paintings were submitted to the OPA committee and only 200 were chosen for the show, a real honor for the artist.

Galina is also a part time art instructor at TMCC and welcomes private students to her studio.

The subject I love

I began the study of visual art in the Academy of Art University in the fall of 2004, for her Masters degree.  In the summer of 2006, I went to Russia, to the most famous
Academy of
Art, by Repin, in
Saint Petersburg.  I studied with Ivan Vituk and Konstantin Grachev in
Saint Petersburg.  The possibility to see the work of many Masters in the Academy’s museum and to study with young and talented Russian teachers, improved my ideas about the art that I want to create.   Now I have Masters in Fine Art from
Academy of
Art,
San Francisco.

The theme of my latest project was the “People on the Earth”.  I shose that because I wanted to tell a story of national development, tradition, and history through people’s appearance.  I think that I choose the subject, because people like to see other people and find the similarity and the difference between themselves and the others.  The realization about who we are could come only thro observation of others.   When I have begun my project, I have known that the subject is so enormous that the work on it is probably going to take all longer then the only ten- twelve paintings time, and so I will continue to thru my art life.  Also, I am interested in different subjects, like nudes (because to beauty of human body), or landscapes (because beauty of every day life), so I work on it when the vision of it strikes me.

In present time the stile of my work is the mix of impressionism and realism, and maybe my approach of painting will change in a couple of days, or a couple of years, but the major principals of painting: drawing, composition, values, temperature, light in color

and edges would go with my brush.

Roots

I returned to my roots with a visit and workshop in the Repin's Russian Academy of Art in Saint Petersburg. Besides the many photos I brought from this trip, I also received an awareness of the many years of Russian intellectualism and the culture of the ages. The work of many of the present day Russian artists in the local museums is connected to the traditions of the stunning art of the Masters. I was lucky to meet young, but talented artists who were teaching the workshop. The painting teacher was Konstantin Grachev, who was superior in the aspect of teaching the students to create individual characters by applying correct color on the canvas. Drawing skill was taught by Gennady Isaew, young in age, but very interesting as an artist. The most fun for all of us students was to work with plain art artist, Ivan Vituk, who not only taught us how to paint, but how to see beauty in every color and shape. His enthusiasm and energy gave our painting experience a new and exciting note.
